March 2017

February is a short month on the calendar, and with school vacation week a particularly quiet month here at Sha’arei Shalom. We had only one service in February — our annual Tu B’Shvat Seder celebrating one of the many “new years” on the Jewish calendar, the new year of the trees. I want to thank the Hecker/Spitzer family who took care of all the shopping and organizing for the service. And a very special thanks to Rose Spitzer who made a special appearance to lead the service in Rabbi Margie’s absence. As always, she did a great job and we are blessed that she is only a short drive away in Worcester.

In many ways the February “lull” offers some a little breather as we prepare to launch into a busy spring with Purim, Passover, student participation services, and of course Bat Mitzvahs. I look forward to celebrating with you all over the next few months. Two highlights this month are:

  • Our Purim celebration on Sunday March 12 with a kid-friendly telling of the megillah and, of course, carnival games. This is a great opportunity to introduce new families to our community. If you know someone who might be interested, please invite them to join us.
  • A special Friday night service on March 24, which will include an Auf Ruf to recognize the upcoming wedding of Jamie Sacks and Ken Levine as well as the 60th wedding anniversary of Harvey and Linda Hecker.
We are also working on organizing both a family social activity and our adults-only Cafe Sha’arei in April. Keep a look out for notices as we finalize those plans.

Finally, if you haven’t done so already, it isn’t too late to make a donation to our Annual Appeal. Please contribute whatever you can—whether $18 or $180 or $1800. Your financial support will help us in maintain a relevant, lively, sustainable center for contemporary Jewish life here in Ashland.
